Fifty Shades of Richness: E.L. James makes £90k a day from Fifty Shades of Grey

E. L. James, the author of the bestselling novel Fifty Shades of Grey has earned £33 million in just one year- which works out as £90,000 a day, marking the tremendous popularity of her erotic trilogy among reader worldwide. E.L James the author of the steamy trilogy made almost four times more than the total earnings for the Harry Potter books of JK Rowling in the same year. So does this make the erotic novelist Britain’s most successful writer?

According to the latest accounts filed at the Companies House show that, 51-year-old business, Fifty Shades Ltd, made £43.9 million in the year to September 2013 – with pre-tax profits of £33.4 million. Profits after tax were £25.5 million. The money came from the world-wide sales of the bestselling trilogy. In February it was reported that the she has now sold 100 million copies of the books including 27 million in the UK and is set to earn even more cash when the film adaption starring Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan is released in 2015. She has also made money from the film rights and merchandise as she launched two branded wines Red Satin and White Satin.

Earlier last year, E.L. James came in third place in Forbes 2013 list of the top- earning celebrities taking home £70 million, which included £4 million accruing from the sale of the film rights to her trilogy that is being translated into blockbuster directed by Sam Taylor-Wood. TheFifty Shades Trilogy won the titles of “Popular Fiction Book of the Year” and “Book of the Year” at the National Book Awards (UK).  James said commenting on the outstanding success of her books “The explosion of interest has taken me completely by surprise,” before describing the Fifty Shades trilogy as “my midlife crisis, writ large. All my fantasies in there, and that’s it”.

Our favorite author E.L James grabbed the fourth position in the list of Britain’s Richest Authors according to Humanities 360 in January 2014.  The first position is held by J.K. Rowling for “Harry Potter” series. On second position is James Oliver followed by Jacqueline Collins. The author of the best selling trilogy was born as Erika Mitchell in London. Before her success with writing she was a T V executive. The 51-year-old author and Naill her husband, who is also a novelist, said that despite of their newfound wealth they are still maintaining a down-to-earth lifestyle and lives in a six-bedroom property in a west London.

The Movie Fifty Shades of Grey is a love tale, which is based around a sadomasochistic millionaire called Christian Grey, who falls in love with and seduces a younger woman Anastasia Steele, who is a virginal college graduate. The Fifty Shades ofGrey movie will hit the theatres on February 13, 2015. The role of 27-year-old Christian Grey will be played by Jamie Dornan and the role of Anastasia Steele will be played by Dakota Johnson.
